Guide: How to Buy Spring Branches

Double Cherry Blossoms

Double Cherry Blossoms

Early Spring can be tough in NYC, we are tired of the cold weather and the attire that goes with it.  One of my favorite pick-me-ups is hitting the flower district on West 28th street for a little peek of what's to come.  Even on a cold day in early February the tulips were out and early spring buds were ready to be sent to restaurants, hotels, and city florists.  I visited my favorite branch expert, Popi at US Evergreens Corp. She lets me know what branches will be flowering in what month so I can plan my home decor and tablescapes.  Generally, the branches to buy in Jan/Feb are quince (small white flowers).  Mid February brings single cherry blossoms (small pink flowers).  The end of February to mid May gives us the fluffy double cherry blossoms, my personal favorite.  I pick out some quince for my mantle. Popi wraps the branches with care and cuts them to my preferred height.  Having your branches cut at the supplier is key because they are so thick you'll have to ask the super for wire cutters!  Nestled on the mantle I watch the quince open up to a full blossom.  They last about three weeks and give my living spaces a hopeful nod to spring.  - xxM
